Stackable washers and dryers can be installed on top of each other with the dryer sitting on top of the washer. These models have one advantage over their counterparts; they save space. So, if you don’t have much room to spare in your home, getting a stackable washer and dryer would be a good choice.

And you’re probably considering Maytag because of its reputation for reliability, correct? Incidentally, in JD Power’s 2022 appliance satisfaction study, Maytag’s washers and dryers were ranked first in customer satisfaction, so you can’t go wrong with this brand. 

But, not all washers/dryers are stackable and you can only stack front-load models. So, in this Maytag stackable washer and dryer guide, you’ll find out what you need to think about when choosing stackable laundry appliances. I’ve also put together a list of Maytag models that I think you should consider, as well as 3 alternative brands just to give you more options.

Maytag’s washers and dryers are among the best in the market, with top reliability records compared to the competition. This is a brand to consider if you’re looking for stackable washers and dryers. 

My top stackable washer recommendation is the Maytag MHW6630HW washer, which has high-end features at a reasonable price. For the dryer, I recommend the Maytag MGD6630HW dryer. This model offers steam functions as well as Advanced Moisture Sensing.

What to Consider when Choosing a Stackable Washer and Dryer

Is It Stackable?

First things first, find out whether the washer and dryer you’re considering are stackable. That’s right, not all front-load washers are stackable so refer to the user guide online to find out whether the manufacturer has specified that it can be stacked. 

Also, most of the time, a washer and dryer from different manufacturers won’t be stackable so you’ll have to buy units of the same brand. Thankfully, Maytag specifies which of its models are stackable, so you won’t have to scour the company’s website to find them. 

Available Space

Do you have enough space for the washer and dryer units? Measure the dimensions of the space in which you want to install the appliances, leaving about 6 inches at the back for venting the dryer and connecting the water or gas lines.

Each side should also have at least an inch of space for ventilation. If the units will be within a cabinet, make sure that you leave enough space to fully open the appliance doors.

Maytag’s stackable units are about 39 inches tall, 27 inches wide, and so you’ll need at least 80 inches of height space and 29 inches of width. The company’s washers have a depth of about 33 inches and the dryers have about 31 inches.

Capacity

Maytag sells stackable washers with 4.5 cu ft, 4.8 cu ft, and 5.0 cu ft capacities. These are perfect for medium to large households because they can wash a load with at least 15 lbs. Sadly, if you have a small household then these might be overkill for you; I would recommend a washer with about 3.5 to 4.0 cu ft.

It’s advised that you get a dryer that’s close to twice the capacity of the washer. This ensures that there’s enough room for the load to tumble freely. You can still opt for Maytag’s stackable dryers, all of which have a capacity of 7.3 cubic feet.

Type of Dryer

You have the choice of either a gas or an electric dryer. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, which I dove into in our Maytag dryer model guide.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the difference between gas and electric dryers.

If you don’t have a gas line in your home then get an electric dryer since getting a new gas connection is costly. However, if you do have a gas connection then consider a gas dryer.

Your Budget

Think about how much you have to spend to identify the stackable units within your budget. Maytag’s stackable washers cost from $1000 to $1400 while the dryers cost from $1100 to $1200. So, to buy the pair, you’ll spend at least $2000 before discounts. If your budget is less than this, consider a laundry center unit.

Features of Maytag Stackable Washers and Dryers to Consider

Fresh Hold/Fresh Spin

If you won’t be unloading the washer immediately after it completes a cycle, then Fresh Spin or Fresh Hold would come in handy. Fresh Spin works by intermittently tumbling the load for up to 12 hours after the end of the cycle. This keeps the clothes from developing wrinkles.

The more advanced version of Fresh Spin is Fresh Hold, which has an internal fan that maintains air circulation while also tumbling the load. You can get Maytag washers with a 16-hour or 24-hour Fresh Hold, with the more expensive models getting the longer time frame.

Extra Power

Maytag’s stackable units have the Extra Power feature. Activating Extra Power enables the washer to use a more intense washing cycle and increase the wash temperature to improve stain removal. In the dryers, this feature raises the drying temperature, increases the tumbling frequency, and extends the cycle’s drying time. This makes sure that there’s no under-drying.   

Steam Option

If you often deal with heavily soiled loads, consider a washer model with the steam option. This feature works with any cycle to improve the cleaning action. You can also use Extra Power and the steam option with a cycle for extremely dirty loads.

Steam-Enhanced Dryer

Consider this feature if you have fabrics that wrinkle easily. Dryers with this feature use steam during the cycle, which results in wrinkle-free clothes. Maytag tells us that this also prevents static. 

Wrinkle Prevent Option

The Wrinkle Prevent Option is found in some Maytag dryers and it works just like the Fresh Hold option in the company’s washers. 

If you’re unable to remove a load from a dryer immediately after the cycle ends, this option will intermittently tumble the clothes to keep them from wrinkling. 

More expensive models have Wrinkle Prevent with Steam, which sprays steam in the tub while tumbling the load. 

Sanitize Cycle

You can find the sanitize cycle in some Maytag washers and dryers. It involves using very hot water (in washers) or extra-high temperatures (in dryers) to kill bacteria in the load. Maytag claims that this cycle eliminates up to 99.9% of common bacteria. This cycle is best for those with young kids.

Advanced Vibration Control

Washer and dryer models with Advanced Vibration Control have a suspension system that ensures even load distribution in the tub. This keeps the unit stabilized, thus reducing vibrations. 

Advanced Moisture Sensing

Maytag dryers with Advanced Moisture Sensing have a series of moisture and temperature sensors that determine whether a load is completely dry and ends the cycle. This prevents over-drying of the load and ensures that large loads are evenly dry.

Smart Features

If you want the convenience of remotely operating your washer or dryer, consider one with WiFi connectivity. Via the Maytag App, you can start or end a cycle right from your smartphone, even if you’re not at home. You can also schedule the time you want a cycle to start and get recommendations on the ideal cycle for specific stains.  Sadly, there’s only one Maytag stackable washer and no dryer with smart features.

At the time of writing, Maytag is offering a 10% discount on this model, pushing its price to below $1000. This makes it an excellent buy for anyone looking for a stackable washer model. You get three color options – black, white, and metallic slate – but the white model costs the least. Just opt for white and save about $100.

Its 4.8-cubic-foot capacity is large enough for a family’s needs. In fact, Maytag says that this washer can fit 30 towels.  At its price, you get bleeding-edge features like steam cleaning, Advanced Vibration Control Plus, and even a 16-hour Fresh Hold option.

Maytag MHW8630HW Smart Front Load Washer

• Its width is 27 inches, height is 39 inches, and depth is 33 inches.
• There are 14 wash cycles and 10 wash options.
• It has a 15-minute Quick Wash cycle.

• It has a 24-hr Fresh Hold option.
• This model has Advanced Vibration Control Plus.
• There’s WiFi connectivity and remote operation.

Admittedly, this is the most expensive Maytag washer in the lineup. However, if you have about $1400 to spare, you’ll get top-of-the-line features that make it an excellent washing machine. Its claim to fame is that it’s a smart washer, the only smart model among the stackable Maytag washers. So, it allows you to remotely operate and monitor it via the Maytag App. 

This app will also notify you if there’s a washer error and will allow you to troubleshoot straight from your smartphone. The Fresh Hold option is also available here, but this model can keep your laundry fresh for up to 24 hours. 

Maytag MED5630MBK Front Load Electric Dryer

Main Features

• The dryer has a capacity of 7.3 cubic feet.
• Its width is 27 inches, height is 38.75 inches and depth is 30.75 inches.
• Its maximum vent length is 64 inches.
• It uses electricity.
• There are 10 drying cycles.
• It has 4 temperature levels.
• This model has Advanced Moisture Sensing.
• There’s the Wrinkle Prevent option.
• It has a Quick Dry cycle.
• There are two color options: volcano black and white.
• The dryer is Energy Star certified.

This electric dryer is currently selling for less than $900, thanks to the 20% discount offered by Maytag. This makes it the value-for-money option for those with a budget of less than $1000. Still, if you’re not lucky to find the sale, its regular price is about $1100, which is still reasonable for a 7.3-cubic-foot dryer.

This model has Maytag’s flagship features like Extra Power and Advanced Moisture Sensing, which make it an effective dryer. Plus, you get 10 cycles, including the handy Wrinkle Control and Quick Dry cycles.

Maytag MGD6630HW Front Load Gas Dryer

Main Features

• The Maytag MGD6630HW has a capacity of 7.3 cubic feet.
• Its width is 27 inches, height is 38.75 inches, and depth is 30.75 inches.
• This model uses gas.
• There are three color options: white, black, and metallic slate.

The Maytag MGD6630HW is a gas dryer that costs about $100 more than the model above. For this price, you get one main feature over its counterpart – steam. However, this one addition unlocks features like Steam Refresh, Wrinkle Control with steam, and steam-infused cycles that improve the drying performance.

Still, Maytag’s signature feature, Extra Power, is in this model, but that should go without saying at its price. Plus, with Advanced Moisture Sensing, your load will always come out perfectly dry.

GE® GFW550SSNWW Smart Front Load Washer

Main Features

This GE washer is currently on sale at a discount of about 10%. This brings its price to below $1000, making it a value-for-money washer option. At this price, you get smart features, so you can operate the washer via the SmartHQ smartphone app.

It also boasts 10 cycles, and among them is Sanitize with Oxi. This cycle, according to GE, eliminates 99% of bacteria. You also get a Quick Wash cycle that does its job within 20 minutes. This, however, is 5 minutes longer than Maytag’s Quick Wash cycle.

Samsung DVG45B6300P/A3 Smart Gas Dryer

Samsung is renowned for making reliable appliances at a reasonable price and this dryer model is a testament to this philosophy. The Samsung dryer can be stacked with a stackable Samsung washer, making it an excellent alternative to Maytag’s models.

It has WiFi connectivity, allowing you to monitor and operate the dryer via the SmartThings smartphone app.  This model also has steam functionality that enables wrinkle-control features. Samsung also gave this dryer a drum light, which is unavailable in the Maytag models. It also has a lint filter indicator that alerts you when the filter is full.

Whirlpool WET4027HW Electric Stacked Laundry Center

Main Features

• The washer has a capacity of 3.5 cubic feet.
• The dryer’s capacity is 5.9 cubic feet.
• Its width is 27.25 inches, depth is 32 inches, and height is 75.5 inches.
• This model has 9 wash cycles and 4 drying cycles.
• It has the AutoDry feature with moisture sensors.
• The washer tub is made of porcelain.

If you don’t want the hassle of getting two separate units and having them stacked, consider this Whirlpool model. It has a simplicity that the other models on this list don’t have, but some might say that it’s too spartan. However, despite its basic design, it does its main job well: washing and drying. The controls are all found at the top, which might be a challenge to reach for your kids. 

Speaking of kids, a small family will find this Whirlpool unit ideal, with the 3.5 cubic feet and 5.9 cubic feet of washer and dryer capacity respectively.
