A part of the Whirlpool family, Maytag is a renowned brand in the home appliance industry that has earned a reputation for quality and reliability. If you’re considering this brand for your next microwave, you won’t be disappointed by the lineup.
However, Maytag’s microwaves aren’t cheap; the lowest-priced one costs $350. Still, you’ll get your money’s worth since the company’s microwaves have advanced features that allow them to do more than warm your mug of coffee.
In this article, you’ll find out about the best Maytag microwaves currently available for sale. You’ll also get to know more about the features available in Maytag’s models and what to consider before making a decision.
Bottom Line Up Front
My number one Maytag microwave recommendation is the Maytag MMV4207JB over-the-range microwave. It has excellent features like Dual Crisp and Brown Function plus a large capacity and a stainless steel cavity. However, if you’re looking for a built-in or countertop microwave, I suggest considering another brand.

Types of Maytag Microwaves
There are several types of microwaves sold by different brands, but if you’re considering Maytag, you’ll only get two options: over-the-range and countertop microwaves.
Over-The-Range Microwaves
Installed over a cooktop or range, over-the-range microwaves perform the functions of a hood as well as a microwave. They are great for those who don’t have ample kitchen space as they don’t take up room on the countertop.
However, their venting systems aren’t as strong as those of dedicated hoods. So, if you cook for a large number of people, the over-the-range microwaves might struggle. Still, for a typical family, these models are adequate. Most of the microwaves in Maytag’s lineup are over-the-range models, so you have several options if this is your preference.
Why buy Maytag’s over-the-range microwaves?
- If you have a small kitchen and you want to save space.
- If you’re looking for a hood as well.
- If you have a small household and you don’t need a dedicated hood.
Countertop Microwaves
These are designed to stand on your countertop. They’re easy to install since you only need to plug them in. Some models can be converted into built-in microwaves by using a compatible trim kit that enables you to install them within the cabinetry.
Unlike over-the-range models, countertop microwaves are easy to reach. They’re also more portable unless you opt to use a trim kit.
Sadly, Maytag only has one countertop microwave available at the time of writing.
Why buy Maytag’s countertop microwave?
- If you don’t want the hassle of installing the microwave.
- If you’re looking for a large-capacity microwave (Maytag’s countertop microwave has the largest capacity in the lineup).
Maytag Microwave Main Features
Convection Microwave Cooking
Convection microwaves perform oven-like functions in addition to general microwave tasks. These models have a heating element and a fan that circulates the hot air within the microwave’s cavity, ensuring even heat distribution.
As a result, convection cooking produces perfectly browned or crisped food. In fact, you can cook whole meals for yourself in Maytag’s convection microwave. Moreover, according to Fine Cooking, convection microwave cooking is faster, with a 25% reduction in cooking time.
Brown Function
Maytag microwaves with the brown function have a heating element at the top of the cavity. This directs up to 1200 watts of heat onto the food, resulting in well-browned and crunchy food.
It is, essentially, a grill within the microwave and is used on small portions of food that was pre-cooked and requires extra browning.
Currently, there are only two Maytag microwave models with this feature.
Dual Crisp Feature
This feature takes the brown function that we’ve looked at above and combines it with traditional microwave technology. The heating element at the top of the microwave cavity directs high heat onto the food while microwave energy evenly heats the inside and outside of the food.
Maytag’s two microwave models with the brown function are the only ones with the dual crisp feature.
Sensor Cooking
This feature uses sensors that can detect the amount of moisture and humidity produced by food while heating. If the amount of moisture emitted is high or low, the sensor is able to adjust the temperature and cooking time accordingly.
Sensor cooking ensures that different foods are cooked precisely and you don’t have to select the cooking time and temperature yourself.
Keep Warm Function
With this function, the microwave is able to retain the temperature of your meal for up to 60 minutes. If you’re preparing multiple dishes, this feature would come in handy, allowing you to keep the earlier prepared dish warm as you cook the other dishes.
Unfortunately, Maytag’s microwaves with this feature can’t keep food warm for longer than 60 minutes. An easy workaround is restarting the function after every 60 minutes.
Microwave Finishes
Maytag sells microwaves with different finishes, depending on your budget and preference. You can choose the fingerprint-resistant stainless steel models if you’re looking for an easy-to-clean model. The company also has heritage stainless steel, as well as regular black and white finishes.
Consider your kitchen’s style and the finish of other appliances when thinking about the microwave’s finish.
Maytag Microwave Model Recommendations
Selection Criteria
- Features – I’ve selected microwaves with extra features that give them added functions.
- Ratings – The recommended models are the highest-rated on the Maytag website.
- Price – These microwaves are at different price points to provide an option for people with different budgets.
Most Affordable Maytag Microwave: Maytag MMV1175JB Over-The-Range Microwave
If you’re looking for an affordable hood/microwave combination, the Maytag MMV1175JB model is one to consider. Priced at about $350, it’s the cheapest microwave in Maytag’s lineup, even priced lower than the company’s countertop model that I’ve featured below.
You can get this model in three colors: black, white, and stainless steel. Surprisingly, at the time of writing, the stainless steel model is on sale for less than $300 although its regular price is $50 more than the other color options.
At the top of the list of features of this model is the fingerprint-resistant build that is found in more expensive models. This microwave also boasts a durable stainless steel cavity.
Main Features
- The Maytag MMV1175JB model has a capacity of 1.7 cubic feet.
- Its cooking power is 1000 watts.
- It has a 12-inch turntable.
- There’s a two-speed exhaust fan.
- It has a fingerprint-resistant finish.
- The cavity is made of stainless steel.
Pros
- This model is reasonably priced.

Cons
- There’s no sensor cooking.
Best Large Capacity Maytag Microwave: Maytag UMC5225GZ Countertop Microwave
With a capacity of 2.2 cubic feet, the Maytag UMC5225GZ model is the company’s largest microwave model, ideal for large households. Sadly, it takes up quite a bit of countertop space, with a depth of 19 ⅝ inches. Maytag knows this so they made this countertop microwave compatible with a trim kit that allows you to build it into your kitchen’s cabinetry. This trim kit, however, is sold separately.
Unlike the model above, this one comes with sensor cooking plus preset cooking options for different meals. Its body is made of fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is kind of expected at this price point. Speaking of price, Maytag is currently selling it for slightly over $400, which is costly compared to similar countertop microwaves from other brands like Whirlpool (check out the alternatives I’ve listed below).
Main Features
- The Maytag UMC5225GZ model has a capacity of 2.2 cubic feet.
- Its cooking power is 1200 watts.
- It has a depth of 19 inches and a width of 24 inches.
- There’s an incandescent interior light.
- It has a 16-inch diameter.

Best Maytag Convection Microwave: Maytag MMV6190FZ Over-The-Range Microwave
The Maytag MMV6190FZ model is the only microwave in the company’s lineup with convection. It’s also the most expensive, with a list price of over $700, although you can get it at a 25% discount at the time of writing. You can tell that this is a premium appliance, with a fancy stainless steel build that gives it a high-end look. And it goes without saying that it has a fingerprint-resistant finish.
As the company’s flagship microwave, Maytag gave it all the bells and whistles you’d expect, like sensor cooking and temperature control on top of convection cooking. The result is a microwave that can bake, crisp, and brown your food, as well as warm your mug of coffee.

- Its capacity is 1.9 cubic feet.

Easy-to-Clean Maytag Microwave: Maytag MMV5227JZ Over-The-Range Microwave
Yes, this microwave is easy to clean thanks to its fingerprint-resistant stainless steel exterior and stainless steel interior. But these are not the only features that grabbed my attention in the Maytag MMV5227JZ model; it has a lot more to offer.
For starters, this model has features like dual crisp and Brown function, which make it an excellent cooking appliance. In fact, you can use this in place of your oven, if you’re preparing a meal for a small number of people. And it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention its Keep Warm function.
Interestingly, these three features aren’t available in the more expensive MMV6190FZ model that I’ve talked about above. However, if you’d like to own this over-the-range microwave, you’ll have to part with more than $500.
Main Features
- It has a capacity of 1.9 cubic feet.
- Its width is 29 inches.
- This model has a cooking power of 950 watts.
- It has 10 power levels.
- Its exhaust fan has 3 speeds.
- There’s sensor cooking.
Pros
- This microwave has excellent cooking performance.
- It’s easy to operate.
- It has a light that illuminates the stovetop.
Cons
- This model is costly.
- It has no convection cooking.
Best Overall Maytag Microwave: Maytag MMV4207JB Over-The-Range Microwave
This is my number Maytag microwave as it offers the greatest value for money. It’s priced over $100 below the MMV5227JZ model featured above yet it offers features similar to its more expensive sibling.
For instance, you get the dual crisp feature as well as the Brown function here, plus a fingerprint-resistant stainless steel exterior. This model also has a similar capacity and wattage to the model above, making it very easy to recommend.
It’s no wonder this is Maytag’s most popular and highest-rated microwave. Incidentally, at the time of writing, Maytag is selling this model for less than $400. Need I say more?

- This model has a 1.9-cubic-foot capacity.

What to Consider When Choosing a Microwave
Size
Microwaves come in different sizes, which are generally categorized according to their external dimensions and internal dimensions (which is capacity). Consider these dimensions in order to determine how much space your new appliance will take up. If you’re opting for a built-in or over-the-range model, factor in the space in which they’ll be installed.
Most over-the-range microwaves have a width of about 30 inches since this is the standard width of most ranges. Built-in models have varying widths depending on the width of your kitchen cabinet.
Capacity
Measured in cubic feet, the microwave’s capacity is a measure of its interior dimensions. The capacity will determine how much food or what size dishes can fit inside it. Maytag’s smallest microwave has a capacity of 1.7 cubic feet, which is still large compared to models from other brands. If you have a large household, microwaves with at least 1.9 cubic feet would be perfect for you.
However, those who live alone will be okay with less than 1.0 cubic feet.
Type of Microwave
Consider whether you need a countertop, built-in, or over-the-range model. If you have a small kitchen, the over-the-range and built-in models would be perfect as they help you save space. However, they also cost more than the countertop models.
If you want a simple plug-and-play microwave, go the countertop route. These are generally quite affordable, with some brands selling basic models that sell for less than $100. However, Maytag’s countertop model is costly because it has a number of advanced features.
Wattage
A microwave’s power is measured in watts. Models with a wattage of less than 800 tend to struggle to heat food through to the center. If you’re looking for a microwave than will quickly and effectively heat up large portions of food, consider at least 900 watts.
Maytag’s lineup has models with 950 watts up to 1200 watts.
Price
Finally, your budget will determine the microwave you end up choosing. If you have at least $300, you’ll have options in Maytag’s lineup. The company’s highest-priced model costs over $700.
Sadly, if your budget is less than $300, Maytag isn’t the right brand for you. Consider one of the other alternatives below.
Maytag Microwave Alternatives
Whirlpool WMH31017HB Microwave Hood Combination
Whirlpool is Maytag’s mother company and it’s one of the most reliable brands. That is why it’s easy to recommend the Whirlpool WMH31017HB model as an alternative to Maytag’s over-the-range options.
Costing slightly over $300, this is a more affordable alternative to Maytag’s microwaves. It sits in the same category as the Maytag MMV1175JB that we’ve featured on the list above. However, this Whirlpool model doesn’t have a stainless steel cavity like the Maytag; it has a powder coat one.
Still, you’re spending slightly less on the Whirlpool model, so the powder coat cavity shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. Plus, you’ll get every other feature on the Maytag, like a two-speed vent fan, 1000 watts of power, and a spacious interior.
Main Features
- This model has a 30-inch width.
- It has a 1.7-cubic-foot capacity.
- Its cooking power is 1000 watts.
- It has a 12-inch turntable.
- There’s a cooktop light underneath the microwave.
- Its vent has a 300 CFM motor.
Pros
- It’s reasonably priced.
- You can change the vent fan speed.
Cons
- It has a powder coat cavity, which is less durable than stainless steel.

GE Profile™ PES7227DLBB 2.2 Cu. Ft. Countertop Sensor Microwave Oven
Maytag’s countertop microwave model seems rather underwhelming to me, so I recommend this GE Profile model as an alternative to consider. It offers a similar capacity to the Maytag model – 2.2 cubic feet – but costs about $30 less.
You get two color options with this model: black and stainless steel. I think the black model looks better, plus it is about 70 bucks cheaper than the stainless steel option. Inside, you get a large turntable and sensor cooking, similar to the Maytag option. However, this one has 100 watts less cooking power. Still, 1100 watts is nothing to sniff at.
Main Features
- This countertop microwave has a capacity of 2.2 cubic feet.
- Its turntable has a diameter of 16.5 inches.
- Its cooking power is 1100 watts.
- The model has a width of 24 inches, a depth of 19.75 inches, and a height of 14 inches.
Pros
- It has a premium look.
- It has a large capacity.
Cons
- The stainless steel option costs over $400.

Frigidaire FMBS2227AB Built-In Microwave
If you’re looking for a reasonably priced built-in microwave, the Frigidaire FMB2227AB is worth considering. It has a stylish look that’s designed to seamlessly fit within your kitchen’s cabinetry. In fact, this model has what Frigidaire calls a zero-clearance door, which is designed to open to 90 degrees irrespective of the configuration of the adjacent cabinets or walls.
Inside, you get a decent 1.6 cubic feet of real estate, complemented by a large 13.5-inch turntable. This Frigidaire microwave also comes with sensor cooking, a welcome feature at a price of slightly over $300.
Main Features
- The Frigidaire FMB2227AB has a capacity of 1.6 cubic feet.
- Its dimensions are 21.75 by 17.25 by 13 inches for the width, depth, and height respectively.

- Its door can easily open to 90 degrees no matter where the microwave is installed.
- This microwave is easy to operate.

- There aren’t many advanced features other than sensor cooking.

FAQs
Question: How do you find out how many watts your microwave is?
Answer: You can either check the serial number sticker at the back of the microwave or refer to the user manual that came with the appliance. Alternatively, you may go to the manufacturer’s website and search for your microwave model to learn its wattage.
Question: Is an 800-watt microwave powerful enough?
Answer: If you only want to reheat small portions of food or cook instant meals, then an 800-watt microwave will do. If you have a large household and want to quickly cook/warm large meals, consider a microwave with a higher wattage.
Question: What does KW mean on a microwave?
Answer: KW on a microwave means kilowatt, which is the amount of electricity that a microwave uses. This is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) – the number of kilowatts used by the microwave per hour.
Bottom Line
Maytag is a brand worth considering for your next microwave if you have a budget of at least $300. However, if you’re looking for a countertop microwave, I wouldn’t recommend the Maytag option as it’s too costly for the features it offers. At its price point, you can get a better microwave from a brand like Whirlpool or GE.
If you’re looking for an over-the-range microwave, Maytag’s microwaves are priced just right. My number one choice is the Maytag MMV4207JB, which has excellent features and a decent price tag.
